Importer of Record and Pre-Shipment Documentation

Importer of Record

Thailand has a thriving economy with above-average tech infrastructure for the region. However, this is not a common location for U.S. clients to have business entities that hold the necessary import licenses and thus most of our clients will need to work with an Importer of Record provider like FGX.

Documentation

Encryption-controlled equipment or equipment that works on specific wireless frequencies, will need additional permits from NBTC (The National Broadcasting Telecommunications Commission). For eligible types of equipment, you will need an NBTC certificate, and an NBTC SDOC (Suppliers Declaration of Conformity). You may need to request The Suppliers Declaration of Conformity from the original manufacturer or distributor of the equipment.

While many of our clients may need permits for their encryption-controlled equipment, the restrictions on wireless frequencies mainly pertain to military-grade equipment that can tap into specific frequencies and is less common. FGX can advise you on which permits your equipment needs, if any, and facilitate the application process. Document approval typically takes one or two business days.

IT Shipping & Logistics

Most shipments fly into Bangkok (BKK) and wide-bodied air freight to this location is easy to secure. Last-mile delivery within the Bangkok area typically only takes a day or two. The lengthiest single aspect of your timeline will likely be customs clearance, which can take up to five to seven days. In total, we suggest you budget for two to three weeks for door-to-door shipment completion.

FGX manages all of our client’s shipments door-to-door (or door-to-datacenter). This case study showcases how we navigated IT logistics and importation into Thailand at the time that it was written. Regulations and challenges are constantly changing and exact shipping requirements may have changed. To learn more about FGX and how our global shipping platform can help your company, reach out here.
