Importer of Record and Pre-Shipment Documentation

Documents

If you have a business entity in Colombia and you want to act as your own Importer of Record you will need to obtain an Import Registration Form from the Ministry of Commerce. This registration must include commercial documents, like a purchase order for the equipment.

To import into Colombia, you will also need a Customs Value Declaration and an Import Declaration. Since these documents are more customs-related, FGX typically helps our clients procure these documents – this generally only takes a few days.

If you are shipping telecommunications equipment you may also need CRC Type Approval. The CRC ensures that your hardware meets the necessary safety and quality regulations set by the Colombian regulatory bodies.

Customs Clearance

Like many other Latin American countries, the customs clearance process is divided into “lanes.” Your shipments lane classification is based on a combination of importer reputation, shipment contents, and customs agent discretion.

IT Shipping & Logistics

There are no unique obstacles to importing into Colombia and freight and shipping are not difficult to come by. However, access to air freight and shipping mediums may take slightly longer to reach the intended destination due to Colombia’s geography and limited number of providers. Hiring an Importer of Record provider that is familiar with the area will drastically reduce the chances of shipment delays.

FGX manages all of our client’s shipments door-to-door (or door-to-datacenter). This case study showcases how we navigated IT logistics and importation into Colombia at the time that it was written. Regulations and challenges are constantly changing and exact shipping requirements may have changed.
